I have always wanted to explore writing music, particularly scoring for film. All the way back in elementary school, I was sitting on the floor of my room, listening to and studying the music of the films that defined my childhood, completely enthralled that these soundtracks could pack so much emotional weight beyond the films they came from. With over 18 years of musical experience playing the piano, I am now beginning my journey into composition.

Today, I'm challenging myself to create more music, through covers of some of my favorite scores from film and other media, as well as diving into original composition.

The Rookie - Score

I had the great pleasure of scoring an animated Star Wars fan film short, The Rookie, produced entirely in Unreal Engine. Big thanks to Eric Barrios and Jason Scott for sharing this opportunity with me and letting me run loose in the Star Wars musical soundscape. Presented here is the full score I wrote for the short, a thrilling Podrace adventure….

Original Composition

An original composition using @spitfireaudio LABS tape orchestra, a textured synth and orchestral library recorded through pre-distressed cassette tapes. Something a little cinematic, a little atmospheric, a little nostalgic— probably draws the most stylistic inspiration from the film scores of Jonny Greenwood.

Another attempt to re-orchestrate a cue from the Phantom of the Opera score. This track was a good experiment in covering a nice range of musical emotions to play in, from intimate harp/celeste to grand, sweeping strings and percussion.

I’d say the biggest thing I still need to improve on is my mixing abilities— as incredible of a tool digital orchestration can be, there is always going to be a synthetic quality to these “instruments,” and I’m still learning how to mix and edit the texture of the sounds to evoke something closer to the real deal. Lots to learn and thankfully there are many great resources out there!

No Time To Die

Been rewatching the Daniel Craig Bond films and have had an itch to study the unique opening themes and scores written for each picture. Even though the new film hasn’t been released yet, at least we can still enjoy the new theme by Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell in the meantime.

You've Got a Friend in Me

Another quarantine composition! First time playing around with the BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover plug-in, covering the first verse of a familiar tune in big band/symphonic style. Great, rich sounds in this orchestra pack and I think some new go-to patches, especially in the strings department. Still learning that going simpler is usually better— I tend to start way too ambitious on the instrumentation, and scaling back will make future orchestral arrangements sound cleaner and less muddled. Also, clarinets are just great.

Pirates of the Caribbean Attraction Medley

All I Ask of You (Reprise)

Orchestral Cover

An exercise in instrumentation by recreating the score to the end of Act 1 of The Phantom of the Opera. Never sounds the same without a real orchestra, but fun to imagine nonetheless. (Ask me about my dreams to one day direct a new big budget studio film adaptation of the musical where Olivia Colman will win best supporting actress for her performance as Carlotta Giudicelli.)

This one’s a bit more of a direct translation orchestral mix of Days 1-3, with Majora’s Theme added to the end for a little ~drama~

A Secret and Personal Journey

Walking through a forest, searching for an old friend. Kondo’s piece about time travel mixed with some cues from Alan Silvestri’s score from another iconic time travel story. It was hard not to make that connection for this cover.
